Pregnancy & Postpartum

You’re pregnant! Now what?

This is the first day of the rest of your life

Pregnancy is such an exciting time! This is also a time with LOTS of questions as well as new or changing health concerns. Once your baby has arrived, becoming a parent for the first time or adding another child to your family is a major life change that is all at once joyful, confusing, and exhausting. Supporting a healthy pregnancy, birth, and postpartum healing can make this major transition smoother.

As your baby grows (so fast!), it can be hard to keep up with all the information, advice, and guidelines out there regarding eating, sleeping, and overall health. No wonder these are key times that patients seek out guidance, support, and reassurance through naturopathic care!

I have experience with all stages of pregnancy, postpartum, and new parenthood, including:

A woman holds both hands over her pregnant belly, forming a heart shape is formed framing her belly button.
  • Supporting healthy pregnancy
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Gestational hypertension
  • Labour preparation
  • Postpartum healing and support
  • Caesarean recovery
  • Infant and toddler feeding
  • Infant and toddler sleep
  • Common childhood health issues

My approach to supporting expecting and new parents:

Dr. Kate Whimster, ND sitting on an off-white couch holding a mug with the letter K on it and smiling. She is wearing a green top and black pants. In the background is a bookshelf full of books.

It is such a privilege to support patients through the major life changes of pregnancy and becoming a parent. There is nothing better than being part of the journey to and through parenthood!

First, we talk through the subjective information which includes current health concerns, history and treatments, and overall medical history and timeline. This subjective information helps me understand your overall health and identify relevant tests and/or treatments. In many cases, there are naturopathic therapies (diet, lifestyle, nutritional supplements, herbs, remedies) that can be applied immediately to support you during pregnancy.

Next, we review the objective information already available, such as testing you’ve already completed, and/or gather additional objective information via further testing to more definitively rule in or out health needs or concerns to address to give additional direction to treatment.

As soon as patients are expecting, they always have A LOT of questions. The goals during pregnancy are:

  • Provide trimester by trimester guidance and support
  • Address health concerns that may arise or worsen during pregnancy
  • Establish sustainable and health promoting habits
  • Prepare for labour and birth
  • Provide guidance and resources for postpartum recovery and new parenthood

Following birth, the questions don’t stop, but now you have a baby to take care of! The goals postpartum are:

  • Support physical, mental, and emotional healing
  • Address health concerns in parent and/or baby
  • Establish sustainable and health promoting habits
  • Provide guidance and resources for many aspects of new parenthood
